Imagine losing everything in a wildfire—your home, your memories, your sense of security. This was the stark reality for many in the Pacific Palisades, a community that Ring founder Jamie Siminoff once called home. But here's where it gets inspiring: instead of letting the devastation paralyze him, Siminoff channeled his pain into action, teaming up with Watch Duty founder John Mills to create Fire Watch—a groundbreaking wildfire alert tool. And this is the part most people miss: it’s not just about technology; it’s about turning tragedy into a lifeline for communities at risk.
The Palisades Fire, which ravaged much of the neighborhood—including the very garage where Siminoff invented the Ring video doorbell—left an indelible mark. While his own home was spared, the destruction around him fueled a determination to make a difference. "If we can take the pain that came from this and turn it into something positive, that’s what we should do," Siminoff said. That resolve sparked Fire Watch, a new Ring safety feature designed to deliver real-time, ground-level wildfire information to both communities and first responders during active fire events.
Within days of the blaze, Siminoff reached out to John Mills, whose nonprofit wildfire tracking app, Watch Duty, became a lifeline for many during the January fires. "My way of coping is engineering," Mills explained. "Same with Jamie. So we said, 'Let’s just do this.'" Their collaboration is a powerful example of how innovation can rise from adversity.
Fire Watch, developed jointly by Ring and Watch Duty, will live in the Neighbors section of the Ring app. Its goal? To provide timely alerts, critical insights for first responders, and better situational awareness for communities when every second counts. The system has three key components: real-time fire alerts powered by Watch Duty, AI-driven smoke and fire detection, and voluntary community contributions from Ring users. Siminoff envisions a network where Ring cameras—over 10,000 of which were active in Pacific Palisades during the fire—can analyze images to detect smoke, embers, and flames. "We have all these videos of fire in people’s backyards, embers blowing around," he said. "If we could have fed that into Watch Duty, I think resources could have been better deployed. Some families might still have their homes."
Under the new system, Ring camera owners can voluntarily share periodic snapshots during fire events, providing first responders with invaluable on-the-ground intelligence. "If there’s a fire spreading toward your neighborhood, we’ve got to catch it while it’s spreading—not once it’s already a major incident," Siminoff emphasized.
When Fire Watch launches in the coming months, alerts and images will feed directly into the Watch Duty app, adding visual confirmation to a platform that already centralizes evacuation orders, red flag warnings, and other critical emergency information. Mills summed up their shared mission: "We just wanted to be of service. A lot of us have lived through this experience in California and across the West. We couldn’t just sit by and let it keep happening."
