Teen Charged: Firecracker Sparks Massive Perth Hills Bushfire (2026)

Imagine a single firecracker turning a night of celebration into a terrifying inferno. That's exactly what happened in Perth Hills on New Year's Eve, when a teenager's reckless act sparked a massive blaze, endangering lives, homes, and even cutting power to thousands. But here's where it gets even more alarming: this wasn't just a small mishap—it was a full-blown emergency that forced evacuations and required a massive response from firefighters and emergency crews.

According to authorities, a 19-year-old man allegedly launched a firecracker into dry bushland on Temby Avenue in Kalamunda, about 25 kilometers east of Perth's CBD, around 12:20 a.m. The firecracker ignited the parched grass almost instantly, and what started as a small flame quickly escalated into a raging bushfire. And this is the part most people miss: the conditions were so dry and the winds so unpredictable that the fire spread rapidly, consuming 25 hectares of land by morning.

Emergency services sprang into action, deploying a waterbombing helicopter and multiple fire crews to battle the inferno. Despite their efforts, the fire continued to burn well into the morning, prompting an emergency warning just before 8:30 a.m. Residents in Maida Vale, Forrestfield, and Kalamunda were urged to evacuate immediately, as their lives and properties were at grave risk. The warning was later downgraded to a 'Watch and Act' advisory around 12:30 p.m., but the danger wasn't over. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) warned that changing conditions could still pose a threat to certain areas.

Here’s where it gets controversial: while the fire is now contained, it’s not fully under control, and some residents are still on high alert. Those living in areas bounded by Norwood Road, Taylor Road, Colac Place, Bird Road, Alpine Road, Wandoo Road, Holmes Road, Lewis Road, and Anderson Road are advised to stay vigilant. Similarly, locals near Hawtin Road, Norwood Road, Welshpool Road East, Lesmurdie Road, Kalamunda Road, and Canning Road should keep a close eye on their surroundings. Residents are urged to close doors and windows to keep out smoke and watch for spot fires on their properties.

Meanwhile, there’s a silver lining for some: residents in parts of Forrestfield and Maida Vale, specifically those near the Roe Highway, Quenington Court, Hawtin Road, and Hartfield Road, are no longer in immediate danger. The fire is currently moving slowly westward, but its unpredictability keeps everyone on edge.

An evacuation center has been set up at the High Wycombe Community and Recreation Centre on Newburn Road, where a community meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. today. Several roads in the area, including Temby Road, Holmes Road at Wandoo Road, Norwood Road at Holmes Road, and Hawkin Road at Maud Road, remain closed. The blaze also knocked out power to over 2,000 homes overnight, though Western Power reports that electricity was restored to nearly all affected properties by 9 a.m.

The 19-year-old from Kalamunda has been charged with a breach of duty of care and is expected to appear in Perth Magistrates Court today. But here’s the question that lingers: Could this tragedy have been prevented with stricter regulations on fireworks, or is it simply a case of individual responsibility?
